Webinar – Using Student Surveys: Implications for Leadership and School Improvement Initiatives, Thursday, March 27, 2014, 1:00-2:00pm Description: Description: Description:

AYPF is hosting a series of webinars examining the use of student surveys to inform continuous improvement of teaching and learning. This webinar will focus on the use of student surveys at the school level. Discussion will be centered on how the surveys are implemented and how the data from student surveys can be utilized to improve professional development and to track progress over time. Rob Ramsdell, The Tripod Project, will discuss the opportunities and challenges inherent in survey implementation, as well as policy implications for professional development of teachers. Susan Martin, Chief Academic Officer, Lewiston School Department, will talk about district-level use of the Tripod survey in Lewiston, ME, and Karen Paquette, Lewiston Middle School, will discuss the use of student feedback to improve teaching and learning at the school level.

Capitol Hill Forum – Re-Engaging Dropouts: Local Innovations & New Opportunities for Federal Policy, Friday, April 4, 2014, 12:00-1:30pm Description:

In collaboration with National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education, and Families, and Youth Transition Funders Group – Multiple Pathways to Graduation Work Group, this forum will examine local progress and federal policy connections to support systematic efforts to re-engage dropouts in education drawing upon a growing body of experience in the multi-city Reengagement Network.  Speakers include Andrew O. Moore, National League of Cities, Institute for Youth, Education, and Families; Eric Dregne, Greater Dubuque Community Foundation; Robert Sainz, City of Los Angeles, Department of Economic and Workforce Development; and Allie Kimmel, Office of Representative Jared Polis.

Ready for Success Blog The Ready for Success Blog, operated by College and Career Readiness and Success Center at the American Institutes of Research, provides practitioners and policymakers with many posts related to college and career readiness. Deeper Learning Deeper Learning in Schools The American Youth Policy Forum has been funded by the Hewlett Foundation to showcase a mix of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that includes critical thinking and problem solving, effective communication, collaboration, an academic mindset, and the ability to learn how to learn – all applied to the mastery of rigorous academic content. Participating school networks include Asia Society, Big Picture Learning, ConnectEd California, EdVisions Schools, Expeditionary Learning; High Tech High, Internationals Network for Public Schools, New Tech Network, and New Visions for Public Schools.  Additionally, a recent white paper featuring profiles on 20 schools that exemplify Deeper Learning, entitled “Deeper Learning for Every Student Every Day,” can be accessed via Getting Smart.

Childtrends Making The Grade: Assessing the Evidence for Integrated Student Supports Child Trends conducted an extensive review of the research and evaluations underlying Integrated Student Support (ISS) approaches operating in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country. ISS approaches promote academic success by securing and coordinating supports tailored to the specific needs of at-risk students. These supports can include tutoring and mentoring, linking students to physical and mental health care, and connecting their families to parent education, family counseling, and food banks. A key component of all these models is the use of assessments to identify supports needed and data to monitor progress over time.

The Forum For Youth Investment Ready by 21 State Policy Survey: Child and Youth Policy Coordinating Bodies in the U.S. This report is the nation’s only survey of state child and youth policy coordinating bodies. The survey assesses coordinating bodies in the areas of partnerships, goals, data, challenges and accomplishments. This biennial survey was conducted first in 2011 and again in 2013, in hopes that the decisions, lessons and experiences it documents can serve as tools for coordinating bodies at all stages of development.

Excelencia in Education The Impact of Financial Aid on Student College Access and Success: The San Antonio ExperienceCo-authored by two community leaders, Noé C. Ortiz and Eyra A. Pérez, the San Antonio experience demonstrates how a community can partner across different sectors and institutions to remove financial aid as a barrier for students to access postsecondary education.

Afterschool Alliance Taking a Deeper Dive into Afterschool: Positive Outcomes and Promising Practices A greater emphasis on evidence-based practices has increased the number of evaluations of afterschool programs, which in turn has helped parents, educators, business leaders and policy makers to see the range of positive outcomes associated with participation in afterschool programs. To better understand promising practices in the afterschool field, this report reviews outcomes associated with participation in afterschool programs, explores research spanning hundreds of programs to present a summary of promising practices of afterschool programs, and provides specific examples of ways in which afterschool programs employ each promising practice.

National Center for Learning and Civic Engagement Schools of Success Evaluation #5 In this report, the National Center for Learning and Civic Engagement looked at the relationships between students’ participation in service-learning and academic performance and school attendance. In several instances, the attendance of students who participated in service-learning activities was statistically higher than their peers who did not participate in service-learning.

Education Commission of the States CTE Dual Enrollment: A Strategy for College Completion and Workforce Investment  An increasing number of students are participating in dual enrollment courses with a career and technical education focus, a trend that research shows should serve states interested in improving college completion and workforce investment. The Education Commission of the States released this report highlighting research that links CTE dual enrollment courses with improved outcomes for traditionally underserved students. In some cases, students in CTE dual enrollment courses outperformed those in traditional academic dual enrollment courses.

MDRC Moving into Adulthood: Implementation Findings from the Youth Villages Transitional Living Evaluation This highly structured program offers clinically focused case management, support, and counseling to youth who are leaving state custody or are otherwise unprepared for independent adult living. It emphasizes treatment planning, ongoing client assessment, and evidence-informed practices. Early findings indicate that it has been implemented well and participation is high.

Pathways Resource Center Achieving Their Goals: Implementing an Individualized Learning Plan Process to Build Student Success This is a free guide that aims to help educators to create relevant, motivating and engaging educational experience for students that serve as the foundation for students to achieve in their college and career goals. The guide is designed to support educators across the Illinois, and specifically the Illinois Race to the Top districts that are required to pilot an Individualized Learning Plan, or “ILP,” process as part of their grant.

Camille Farrington Failing at School: Lessons for Redesigning Urban High Schools Camille Farrington, a research associate (assistant professor) at UChicago CCSR, proposes fundamental changes to high school design, based on what researchers know about how students learn, what motivates them to engage in learning, and what kinds of educational systems and structures would best support their learning. Farrington argues that high schools were designed to generate widespread student failure and considers the changes that would need to occur for all students to have a legitimate shot at college.


AYPF is hiring!

The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) is seeking an Operations Coordinator to join our nonprofit team dedicated to providing learning events to education and youth policymakers. The Operations Coordinator is a key member of the organization who works closely with other members of the operations teams and program staff in the design and execution of learning events. AYPF provides between 30-35 learning events each year. The position will require multi-tasking, as several events can occur in the same week or month. Professional and courteous interaction with a wide range of high-level individuals is required. The Operations Coordinator will work closely with the Database Administrator, the Web Communications Associate, and other administrative support.

The American Youth Policy Forum is looking for an Operations Intern to support our event and communications staff. AYPF’s Capitol Hill forums, webinars and discussion groups bring together educators, policymakers, and researchers in an effort to bridge education and youth policy, practice, and research. Our ideal candidate is motivated, detail-oriented, can juggle multiple tasks at once, and will have prior event and conference planning experience. The position involves interacting and coordinating with Capitol Hill and policy staff on a regular basis, and is a great opportunity for a candidate interested in operations or event planning in a dynamic, high-profile organization. This position offers a monthly paid stipend.

AYPF is also looking for an experienced brief writer to support our communications efforts on a contract basis. AYPF’s Capitol Hill forums and discussion groups bring together educators, policymakers, and researchers in an effort to bridge education and youth policy, practice, and research. The brief writer will be responsible for writing clear, concise, accurate briefs of the events to post on AYPF’s website.
