On Friday, March 15, 2019 , The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) and the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) hosted the fifth and final Samuel Halperin Lecture and Youth Public Service Award at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. The lecture and youth award have served as an ongoing tribute to our founder, Sam Halperin, who dedicated his life and career to improving youth education, workforce, and policy outcomes. Sam also helped to personally mentor many youth and young adults in their careers in public service, and through this award, we hope to honor and continue his work.

The Lecture:

This year we were excited to welcome, Roberto J. Rodríguez, President & CEO of Teach Plus and a former advisor on education to President Barack Obama, as our esteemed lecturer. As the President & CEO of Teach Plus, Mr. Rodríguez fosters a teacher leadership movement that supports the contributions of teacher leaders to educational innovation and change. Prior to joining Teach Plus, Mr. Rodríguez served as Deputy Assistant on Education to President Barack Obama. In this position, he developed and advanced policies to improve educational opportunity for learners from birth through adulthood.

The Award:

Kenvin Lacayo was named this year’s Halperin Youth Public Service Award winner. Kenvin appeared at the lecture to share his winning essay with education and youth policy leaders from the DC area and around the nation. In addition to Kenvin’s winning essay this year we are pleased to feature an additional essay written by Laura Singer. To read Kenvin’s essay click here. To read Laura’s essay click here.
