AYPF will host a series of forums examining the use of student surveys to inform continuous improvement of teaching and learning. The second forum will take place on Friday, January 31, 2014, and is entitled “Using Student Surveys: Implications for Leadership and School Improvement Initiatives.” This forum will focus on the use of student surveys at the school level. Discussion will be centered on how the surveys are implemented and how the data from student surveys can be utilized to improve professional development and to track progress over time. Rob Ramsdell, The Tripod Project, will discuss the opportunities and challenges inherent in survey implementation, as well as policy implications for professional development of teachers. Susan Martin, Chief Academic Officer, Lewiston School Department, will talk about district-level use of the Tripod survey in Lewiston, ME, and Karen Paquette, Lewiston Middle School, will discuss the use of student feedback to improve teaching and learning at the school level.

Rob Ramsdell, The Tripod Project
Susan Martin is the Chief Academic Officer for the Lewiston Public Schools, a 6000 student diverse school system in Maine. She holds a BS and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and in Adult Education. She has served as a Principal, teacher, grant writer, and Adult Education Director in various Maine Schools. She has also worked at the post-secondary level teaching, supervising student teachers, and organizing community based research. Currently, she is overseeing the district’s transition to a standards based system. Teacher leadership is a major focus of her work.
Karen Paquette is an Assistant Principal at Lewiston Middle School in Lewiston, ME. She has worked as a Literacy Specialist in the largest elementary school in Maine where she took an active role in developing literacy programming for hundreds of newly arrived refugees. In addition to her BS and M.ED, Karen holds a CAS in Literacy Leadership. Additionally, she has worked as a primary grade teacher and an interventionist. Currently within her administrative role, she is working with English Language Arts and content standards to find novel, engaging ways to help students reach proficiency. She has a leadership role in the district’s transition to Common Core.
Rob Ramsdell began his career as a high school social studies teacher and founded FreshPond Education in 1996. Since that time he has worked with hundreds of schools and districts to design and implement high quality school improvement programs and professional development initiatives. During a three-year period from 2002-2005 Rob served as Senior Director of PBS TeacherLine, an online professional development initiative funded by the US Department of Education.
In 2007 FreshPond Education joined Cambridge Education where Rob served as its Vice-President of School Improvement Services through 2013. Since 2003, Rob has also partnered with Ron Ferguson on the Tripod Project and Rob now focuses all of his time on work with Ron to support states and districts that are implementing Tripod student surveys. Rob holds a B.A. from Brown University, an M.A. in educational administration from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a M.Ed. in educational technology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
