PCC is Oregon's largest educational institution serving more than 80,000 students annually by providing a wide range of educational opportunities for area residents, including transfer programs, professional technical training, workforce development, alternative education, ABE/GED/ ESL, and K-12 bridge options. PCC's Alternative Program department provides alternative education options for nearly 1300 16-20 year old high school dropouts and at-risk students annually and leads the national replication of one of its programs, Gateway to College, through the Early College High School Initiative supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. |

PCC believes that all young people can be successful in the collegiate environment even though they may not have been successful in traditional high school settings. To that end, PCC's Alternative Programs department partners with six local school districts to provide a continuum of services for 16 - 20 year old young people who have dropped out of school or who are about to drop out of school. These services address students' interests and needs and include Gateway to College (high school completion), Youth Empowered to Succeed (GED prep), and Multicultural Academic Program (ESL ). Through the Early College High School Initiative funded by Gates Foundation along with Carnegie Corporation, Ford Foundation, and Kellogg Foundation, PCC is replicating Gateway to College at 20 community colleges nationally. Currently, nine national sites (community colleges) are serving youth, three are in training, and eight additional sites will be selected in the future. As of April 2007, the nine national sites were working with a total of 42 school districts and 1740 students were enrolled. |
