The Means to Grow Up: The Role of Apprenticeship in Preparing All Youth for College and Career Success: President Obama recently advocated pursuing postsecondary education for a year after high school: “I ask every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training.” He explained that postsecondary education could be in a “community college or a four-year school; vocational training or an apprenticeship.” Preparing all youth for college and career success is a top Federal priority, however in order to ensure all youth have the skills to access and succeed in postsecondary education, it is important to consider the 21st century skill development, youth development supports, including positive adult relationships, and opportunities for self-efficacy, needed to prepare youth for college and career success. This forum will highlight how apprenticeships for high school students can engage them in education through hands-on learning and unique experiences under the guidance of skilled professionals. The forum is also based on the new book, The Means to Grow Up: The Role of Apprenticeship in Preparing All Youth for College and Career Success, by Robert Halpern, which describes qualitative studies of apprenticeship programs that provide activities and programs for high school students across a range of disciplines. Speakers: Robert Halpern, Professor, Erikson Institute for Graduate Study in Child Development (IL), Nancy Diaz Bain, Co-Director of The Met School Unity Campus (A Big Picture School) (RI), Representative, Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship Program (WI) (Forum) RSVP HERE!
